Report of enzootic calcinosis associated with the consumption of CESTRUM DIURNUM (day blooming jasmine) in a red deer (CERVUS ELAPHUS) from the national zoo of Cuba Reporte de calcinosis enzóotica asociada al consumo de CESTRUM DIURNUM (galán de día) en un ciervo rojo (CERVUS ELAPHUS) del parque zoológico nacional de Cuba Menéndez Brito, Irma Rosa Enzootic calcinosis Cestrum diurnum captive red deer Calcinosis enzoótica Cestrum diurnum ciervo rojo cautivo There was a report of a case of a captive red deer (Cervus elaphus) from the National Zoo of Cuba showing weight loss and kyphosis with walking difficulties. Cestrum diurnum had proliferated in the pasture where it was grazing and was ingested during a period of approximately two dry months, in which it also consumed little forage. The animal died, and at necropsy, the most outstanding findings were tissue mineralization of the aorta, carotid and pulmonary arteries, and calcification of the entire lung parenchyma. Additionally, a serous atrophy of the coronary heart fat and subcutaneous cellular tissue was observed as evidence of malnutrition. In this sense, it is concluded that the combination of factors given by the intense drought, the abundant exposure to Solanum glaucophyllum and the morphopathological picture found, represented a case of enzootic calcinosis associated with the consumption of Cestrum diurnum. Se reportó un caso de ciervo rojo cautivo (Cervus elaphus) del Parque Zoológico Nacional de Cuba que presentaba adelgazamiento y cifosis con dificultades para caminar. En el cuartón donde se encontraba pastoreando había proliferado Cestrum diurnum, el cual ingirió durante un período aproximado de dos meses de sequía en el que además consumió poco forraje. El animal falleció y en la necropsia se encontraron como hallazgos más sobresalientes, mineralización de tejido en la aorta y las arterias carótidas y pulmonares, y calcificación de todo el parénquima pulmonar. Además, se observó atrofia serosa de la grasa coronaria del corazón y del tejido celular subcutáneo como señales de desnutrición. En este sentido, se concluye que la combinación de factores dados por la sequía intensa, la exposición abundante a Solanum glaucophyllum y el cuadro morfopatológico encontrado, se trataba de un caso de calcinosis enzoótica asociado al consumo de Cestrum diurnum.
